With the help of the kjarr pride, Tielle watched as they cleared the monitors out of the cave. Long, webbed spines flowed from the nape of their neck and down their backs. The kjarr gryphons called them sailfins.

With the help of a keen-sighted owl gryphon, they searched the cave. There was no sign of Cici. If he’d escaped, there was no evidence of it.

Tielle’s parents stood behind her. Relief that their daughter had survived was overshadowed by their son’s absence.

Her mother turned to the bodies of the sailfins. “Cut them open.”

Tielle looked away while the owl gryphon cut open the sailfins’ stomachs. There were some patches of white fur but not enough of a body to make an identification.

She moved a little way away from the cave entrance. She couldn’t stand to be so close to the darkness. She kept thinking Cici would step out of the cave at any moment.

“She’s only alive because she ran,” Tielle’s father said.

“Cici is only dead because she ran,” her mother countered.

While her parents argued, Williwaw’s pride leader walked up to Tielle. “Are you okay?”

She looked down at her paws. The warm spring felt cold. She shivered.

The pride leader groomed some of her matted fur.

“Will I be kicked out of the pride?” she asked.

“No, of course not.” He lifted her face up and looked her in the eye. “But Tielle, you can’t run from your problems. You have to promise me that.”

She nodded. Her parents might never speak to her after today, but she’d be a good taiga gryphon. She’d never run again.
